Some things just seem like a bad idea at the time, others need to be viewed as such in retrospect. Yet others can simply be labeled as WTF moments. This falls into the latter category. Have you ever seen Bowie's Young Americans era appearance on the Dick Clarke Show - he looks skeletal chats about all sorts of bizarre bits - 'noise bombs', and has a Fancy-Dan cane and plenty of sniffing - hmmmm
They're all mostly career musician/performers/variety artists these days. We need more aliens.
